C&N 'to stop yacht building'
01 Jul 2005
The moves comes as the yard announced job losses recently, with more than 50 workers being told to expect to lose their jobs in September when refit work on the Dunkirk evacuation boat The Bounty comes to an end.
Workers in the firm's 15strong refit department are expected to feel the brunt of the job cuts. But company bosses have denied reports that the site is under threat of closure, stating instead that the shipyard is to abandon yacht building and concentrate on powerboats.
After the company's acquisition by Leonardo Ferragamo's Nautor Group in July 2001, its move into powerboats was announced as "the first step in relaunching the C&N brand".
The £500,000 Endeavour 42 luxury express weekend cruiser has already proved to be a winner, with the boat collecting the European Powerboat of the Year title in the 40ft category at the Dusseldorf Boat Show this year.
Yard manager Raffaele Burgio said: "There will be job losses as we're reducing our refit department, but we've not decided the number at the moment. But I know for sure Camper & Nicholson will not close."
