Diesel laundering closes canal

The Grand Union Canal was closed recently after thousands of gallons of diesel spilled into the canal from a road drain at Linslade, Beds.

Once alerted, British Waterways (BW) and the Environment Agency (EA) traced the source of the leak to a barn, where it appears an operation to turn red diesel into white diesel was under way. HM Customs has now taken up the case and is investigating.

The UK's derogation on red diesel expires on December 31, 2006, which could lead to huge price increases for leisure craft.
