Record crowd at Beale Park

A record 7,400 people went to the Beale Park Thames Boat Show in Pangbourne last month and, according to the Environment Agency (EA), nearly 2,000 got out on the water.

Supported by the EA and the Thames Boating Trades Association (TBTA), the event featured over 140 exhibitors showing every type of boat from canoes and dinghies to classic wooden boats and £300,000 luxury motor cruisers.

The event offered a wide range of displays, including historic steam powered boats from the Steam Boat Association, sports boats from Islecraft, electric launches from the Thames Electric Launch Company, a replica Victorian houseboat from Hambleden Sales and Charter Ltd, a selection of historic boats from the Thames Vintage Boat Club and motor cruisers from Boatshowrooms.

Younger visitors joined in the fun thanks to the children's organisation Wild Over Waterways (WOW), which put on lots of activities aimed at educating children about our inland waterways and teaching them to value our rivers and canals.

As part of its partnership with Beale Park, the EA offered visitors free river trips aboard its patrol launch, Seven Springs . "Events like Beale Park Boat Show are really important for introducing new people to boating, the River Thames and the waterways, " said Eileen McKeever, the EA's Thames waterway manager. "It was great to see so many families enjoying themselves last weekend and taking part in boating activities they may not have tried before - I hope we will see more new visitors to the River Thames as a result.
