Geldof wants our help for SAIL 8
01 Jun 2005
His target is the world leaders who will attend the G8 Summit scheduled to run at the Gleneagles Hotel from July 6 to 8.
Geldof wants to get as many people as he can to go to Gleneagles to tell the leaders they have to do more about the world's poor.
He has already made arrangements to get people to Gleneagles from Italy, Germany and the USA. In fact, film star John Travolta is heading a flight of private jets, flying direct to Edinburgh from the US? So Geldof now needs to get French people over to Gleneagles to add to the voices from the rest of the world. And he wants the help of the UK's sailors.
What for? Simple. He wants to run Operation Dynamo in reverse. Hence the Sail 8.
A Sail 8 spokesman told BB:
"The plans call for 5,000 - 10,000 people to arrive on the French shores and we hope to mobilise hundreds of small yachts to set sail from the UK in much the same vein as Dunkirk but ten-fold."
Once our sailors have brought them over here, Richard Branson will take everyone up to Gleneagles.
Easy, isn't it?
This is not a protest, the spokesman assured BB. It's a mass of people making their voices heard.
IPC is helping out by offering its website for boat registration - anyone interested should go to www.ybw.com for more details.
It's hoped Ellen MacArthur may be involved with the project, but this has yet to be confirmed. What is certain is that with Geldof and Richard Branson involved, the PR opportunities are likely to be enormous for all those taking part.
We can't give you any more details right now because this thing is evolving by the minute:
a meeting with the South Coast media finished as this was being written. They have been alerted and, again, by the time you read this you should have heard, read or seen lots more details on your local news.
It sounds a fantastic project.
This world needs a few more Bob Geldofs.
