Scantlings progress
01 Jun 2005
TC 188's Working Group 18 responsible for the development of ISO 12215-5 met recently in London to review the results of a major ICOMIA funded validation exercise, comparing the draft standard against existing construction practise.
Data was received from France, Finland, Japan, The Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom, USA and Italy and totalled more than 170 boats.
This provided the working group with a global overview.
In addition to the international validation effort, reports were received from France and Japan.
Due to the large amount of information, it could be demonstrated that the standard reflects current construction practice. However, some key issues were identified which need to be amended.
The group agreed to aim for an FDIS publication in September this year. A small sub-group will meet in May to prepare the standard for final draft.
"I congratulate the working group and especially its convenor, Gregoire Dolto, for what it has achieved, " said ICOMIA secretary general Tony Rice. "Real progress has been achieved in the past year and this validation exercise confirms the quality of its work."
