Cat's first C Family ACERT unit for the yachting market
01 Mar 2005
The new engine, launched at Dusseldorf, is the first of Caterpillar's C Family to feature the company's ACERT technology, developed through a $500 million R&D investment and, apparently, hailed as breakthrough technology in terms of emissions, power density and fuel economy.
Caterpillar says the C32 ACERT development touched all the major components of the existing V-12 platform from cylinder block to cylinder packages, gear train, optimised turbocharging and after-cooling, latest generation EUI fuel system and ADEM IV electronics.
The company says the result is higher power density with class leading 1825mhp and, in addition, the flat power curve achieved and welcomed so strongly by the market. They say this means that top rated power is available, instantaneously, between vessel cruising speed at 1900rpm and top rated speed at 2300rpm.
The C32 ACERT has undergone comprehensive factory and field tests where all components were tested to the extreme in terms of loading, operating temperatures, installation angle and a range of other criteria.
According to the company, the unit is a perfect power option for 25 - 35m planing hull open (sport) and flybridge yachts. They also say the C32 ACERT is ideal for the delivery of added power for smaller sport fishing or racing boats of 15m and upwards, in line with Caterpillar's design and development goals of high levels of horsepower to weight ratios.
A number of boatbuilders, including Azimut, Ferretti, Benetti, Hatteras, Sunseeker, Princess, Pershing, Canados, Alfamarine and Bertram, have already either expressed an interest or placed firm orders for Cat C32 ACERT engines, delivery of which will commence during the 3rd quarter of 2005.
