£1/4m funding for Scottish Sailing Institute

The Scottish Sailing Institute was established at Largs five years ago to market the Clyde as a major yachting venue for major events, writes Mike Balmforth.

Its future was recently underpinned when a new £250,000 three-year funding package was secured from Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire, North Ayrshire Council, and sportscotland.

This included almost £80,000 of European Regional Development Funds, facilitated through the Strathclyde European Partnership.

The funding package is not only good news for the many local businesses, marine and otherwise, which benefit when big fleets of boats come to town, but it will also enable the SSI to hire another staff member to help run events, allowing Jo Dixon to concentrate on marketing and fund raising.

This year has already seen the RYA Youth Championships taking place at Largs, which were visited by RYA President HRH The Princess Royal, and the Topper Championships, and the Topper Championships will take place later in the summer.
