BMF and RYA in derogation talks with Revenue

A meeting was held at the British Marine Federation (BMF) in Egham last month with officials from HM Revenue & Customs to discuss the implications of the loss of the UK's derogation on red diesel.

The Revenue officials at the meeting will be responsible for briefing ministers who will take the decision on the retention or loss of the derogation.

The Revenue officials were familiarised with the boating market and the success of the UK leisure marine industry.

The RYA, which has been working with the BMF on the red diesel problem, presented results of its research among its members on the probable impact loss of the derogation would have in terms of the public's enjoyment of boating.

The BMF outlined the consequences the loss would have on its members who supply red diesel to consumers and the subsequent likely damage to the industry.

According to the BMF, the Revenue officials reacted positively to the arguments put to them, but stressed that if ministers take the decision to push for the derogation with the European Commission, it would require unanimity by voting EU member states to achieve final approval.

"This was an extremely encouraging meeting, " said Howard Pridding, executive director of the BMF. "I believe we have given them a good understanding of the very detrimental impact that loss of the derogation will have on the public's enjoyment of boating and a very successful sector of UK industry."

Pridding went on to say that the derogation decision will be taken by politicians and there is a need to increase awareness of the problem at local levels.

"I want companies to ensure their own MP is aware of the impact that the loss of this derogation could have on their businesses in respect of loss of revenue and jobs, " he said.
