Ferry terminal fears
01 May 2005
The society's view is that while it's desirable to find a location for a new terminal eliminate the current dangerous mix of ferry traffic and recreational craft in Cowes harbour, the enormous marshalling yard on reclaimed land on the Shrape Mud would be ugly when viewed from seaward.
If the marshalling yard is essential to the operation of the ferry terminal, says the Society, there should at the very least be a screen along the north-east side of the reclaimed land as well as on the south-west.
There have been many proposals for marinas in East Cowes over the years. The reason why none has gone ahead is the unalterable fact that this is the lee side of Cowes harbour and, in the great majority of gales, protection is essential in the form of a breakwater, for which the East Cowes Project appears to make no proposals.
