Lochrin Basin re-opened

The Lochrin Basin at Fountainbridge in Edinburgh was re-opened in March by Transport Minister Nicol Stephen MSP.

Following completion of Phase 1 of the £60 million Edinburgh Quay, the 260m stretch of canal has now been re-flooded, creating a thriving waterspace and allowing access for boats through the Leamington Lift Bridge to the terminus of the Union Canal at the impressive mixed-use development.

"This revitalised waterway should attract visitors from the city and from further afield, " said transport minister Nicol Stephen.

The re-flooding of the basin at the start of the new boating season is the latest in a series of recent canal related works across Scotland. The canal reconnection at Port Dundas on the Forth & Clyde in Glasgow is progressing well and thanks to additional funding from the Scottish Executive, extended maintenance activity has been undertaken on both the Highland and Lowland waterways during the winter months.

In addition, new facilities at the 55 berth Auchinstarry mooring basin are now complete with a formal opening of the basin planned for later in the summer.
