Marine South East goes limited

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) in the UK has announced that the Marine South East initiative, which was initially set up in 2004 to address the needs of the marine sector in southeast England, has been turned into a limited company headed by new CEO Jonathan Williams, writes Iain Sutherland.

Marine South East Ltd has been given a three-year rolling grant of £250,000 per year on behalf of SEEDA and will work closely with various trade bodies to ensure that the agency's investment adds value to existing activities.

"Marine South East will pursue an ambitious, businessled agenda to promote increased productivity, improved access to export markets, and recognition by government, " says Williams, former CEO of Marinetech South and marine industry advisor to SEEDA.

The marine industries face many opportunities for growth, he added, but also face increasingly tough global competition and I am confident that Marine South East will play an important role in helping businesses to meet that challenge.

SEEDA announced the launch of the Marine South East initiative at the Southampton Boat Show in September 2004.

Since then, the group has strived to identify projects of strategic importance to the sector's growth.

It also works with various teams and partnerships to support increased economic development of the marine sector in south east England, which is estimated to be worth around £5 billion.
