SoundBuoy gets 14509 approval
01 Sep 2005
Until SoundBuoy, the only way to demonstrate compliance with the standard was by testing from an anchored support boat or from a fixed platform such as a jetty.
SoundBuoy is dropped in the water and anchored or left to drift. The buoy's computer system directs the skipper to pilot the boat past at the standard distance of 25m and then reports back the maximum sound pressure level that it has recorded.
Once testing has been completed the buoy is recovered by the test boat.
Immediately following its approval, TML used SoundBuoy to test some of the latest Broom boats.
"The East Coast presents some challenging conditions for sound testing. Anchoring a support boat to carry out conventional pass by testing would have been very difficult, " said TML's MD, Ken Wittamore.
