Green Marine sorts Clipper fleet

After last month's news that jobs were to go at Green Marine, the company has been involved in two high profile overseas projects, writes Iain Sutherland.

The company is to partner with major composite builder Cobra International in an ambitious venture in Thailand, to form Composites Marine International (CMI) under the managing directorship of Pom Green.

CMI operates with 4000 employees out of impressive facilities on the Amata Nakorn industrial estate 50km south east of Bangkok where a 5500 square metre factory is being built for them. Cobra International has an additional 100,000 sq metres where it manufactures surfboards, windsurfers and many other composite products.

CMI is already building three all carbon IRC46 boats to a Simon Rogers design.

The second overseas project was sorting the Clipper fleet's keel problems in Subic Bay in the Philippines (see BB March issue front page).

After surveys identified problems with the connection between the outer skin of the hulls and the keel, Clipper Ventures called in Green Marine.

Dave Monks and two Green Marine colleagues arrived in Subic Bay on February 20 and, with a restart date of March 25 targeted, began assembling work crews and setting up an effective production line.

Monks and his team did the business and got the 10 boats back out to the start line.

And as a testimonial to Green Marine's work, Monk raced on the leg to Qingdao.
