As chief executive he will be responsible for heading up the BMF and its subsidiary, National Boat Shows (NBS), the organiser of the London and Southampton boat shows.

Stevens joins the BMF from a senior post in the Royal Navy.

He has a record of success as director of maritime operations in NATO and in the UK as head of the UK's submarine service.

He has also headed up a number of Ministry of Defence policy teams.

"I am delighted that Rob Stevens is taking up the position of BMF chief executive, " said BMF president Peter Methven. "He comes with a wealth of invaluable experience, which will be of great benefit to the BMF and our members and will ensure the federation continues to address the needs of the British marine industry."

Talking of John Clarke's reign as chief executive, Methven said: "The BMF is grateful for the commitment and passion that John Clarke has shown the federation over the past five years, and wish him a very happy retirement."

"I am looking forward to getting to know the industry better and the staff at BMF and quickly getting to grips with the challenges and issues, " said Stevens.
