Braunston Rally set for June 24 & 25
01 Feb 2006
Following the success of last year's annual Braunston Historic Narrowboat Rally & Canal Festival - which with 63 historic working narrowboats was probably the largest such rally ever held anywhere - organisers Braunston Marina say the event now has a new focus in alternate years.
The event focus will switch each year betwee the large surviving Fellows Morton & Clayton fleet - as featured in 2005 - and all the other fleets with Braunston associations - Samuel Barlows, Blue Line, Nursers, Willow Wren and the Grand Union Canal Company.
These other fleets will now be the feature of the 2006 event, to celebrate the recent restorations of two of Braunston's most important historic narrowboats, Nutfield and Raymond, which had Samuel Barlows and Blue Line connections.
All historic Braunston and Grand Union narrowboats will be moored in the old Oxford Arm in the marina. Other historic narrowboats will be moored out on the mainline, thanks to the support of British Waterways, say the organisers.
All historic narrowboats will participate in the now famous twice-daily parades. The event is open to all historic narrowboats.
The village of Braunston will also join in the celebrations with a canal-theme concert in the church on the Friday night, and a special waterside church service in the marina on the Sunday morning.
To help cover the infrastructure costs and to add to the public interest, trade exhibitors are invited to attend, including local boatbuilders.
Canal societies with whom the marina is associated are also invited - and all are being offered free marquee or outside space.
There will be an admission charge to the public of £10 per car. All profits will be donated, as usual, to canal and local causes, the main recipient being the canal charity, Friends of Raymond.
