Daino wins Concept Boat
01 Feb 2006
Daino wins £3,000 and received high praise from both the BMF and the panel of judges. His Silvacat entry brings together the principles of sailing and windsurfing, and was designed with racing in mind.
Inspired by design guru R J Mitchell, who created the Spitfire aeroplane, Daino's design is ideal for travelling - breaking down into six pieces to fit into a case that can be strapped to the roof of a car.
Commenting on his entry, the judges commended his fresh and innovative look at sailing. "[It is] a very exciting and intriguing concept with the great potential for a new racing programme using an attractive and exhilarating approach to sailing."
The annual design event is run by the British Marine Federation (BMF) and supported by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA).
This year's competition was fronted by designer Wayne Hemingway, founder of Red or Dead, with the theme "Boating for all". It challenged entrants to design a recreational craft to appeal to as many people as possible via original designs that created a safe, usable and stylish vessel of the future.
The theme of Concept Boat 2006 is "Tow A Boat".
