Castle Wharf campaign needs your support

In spite of British Waterways (BW) and the deputy prime minister's wish to see more freight carried on the waterways, it seems saving the wharves necessary for freight loading and boat maintenance is not getting quite the same publicity.

The next wharf under threat is Castle Wharf in Berkhampstead. There has been a boatyard on the Castle Wharf site since 1799, but what makes the saving of the site so necessary is that Berkhampstead used to be a large inland port with eight wharves.

Castle Wharf is the last of those eight sites and, unless Lindy Foster Weinreb and her band of friends can get the support, the current planning application for demolition of the boatyard and construction of three terraced houses and two flats will be passed.

Check out the Castle Wharf website at www.saveourwharf.org.uk and you'll find the history and what you can do to support the protest action.
