The display gauge and sender market is changing

Faria supply marine engine instrumentation, targeting for many years the display gauge and sender market, which involved custom made gauges to suit boatbuilders' requirements.

But times have changed and so has the market place, with many of today's engines being fitted with electronic engine management control systems.

Referred to as ECM or CAN Serial Bus Interfaces, these management systems control the engine via microprocessors and microcontrollers, which ensure that the engine runs efficiently and meets today's emission standards. This involves hi-speed digital data.

Some of the basic coded data, known as the protocol, can be displayed on multifunctional screens built into the tachometer - see picture - or speedometer in the MG2000 Series of 4" and 5" gauges, which have in-built systems warning alarms. By using two of the three scroll-touch buttons the screen displays can be altered to show the boat heading and position using GPS - NMEA 0183.

Trip log and fuel consumption data and many other features are part of the MG2000, which was launched at the recent Seawork 2006.

Distributor ASAP Supplies say the system is complemented by the very compact and cost effective' Faria Watchdog system, which has been developed to provide owners/ operators with a complete vessel tracking, obser-vation and engine diagnostic package.

This package will suit almost any type of vessel in any part of the world. The systems use GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) and LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites to give up-to-the-minute, cost effective movement reports. They provide live as well as historic movement data and if the propulsion engine is fitted with ECM Engine Serial Bus system and the vessel carries onboard network systems data.

All on board systems can be accessed from any computer/ laptop giving owners/operators the opportunity to monitor movements.

This improves time efficiency by enabling the engineers to view engine data and prepare for service problems in advance. While the vessel is not in use the Geofencing alarm system gives a warning of unauthorised vessel movement, battery condition, dangerous high bilge water levels, intruder warning, and, due later in the year, on board surveillance.
