BW 'not contemplating restrictions'

Even though drought orders are now in place in the south, BW says it is currently not contemplating any restrictions to boating and is hopeful that this will remain the position for the rest of the summer.

Levels in the reservoirs that supply the BW network have generally fallen during April and May in response to increasing temperatures, demands and the below average rainfall.

However, BW says this is a normal pattern for this time of the year.

In the majority of cases levels have historically been much lower, with the Grand Union & Oxford 37% lower in 2003. The exceptions are the Grand Union South and the Kennet & Avon, which are currently close to the lowest recorded.

BW is closely monitoring the Grand Union South, Oxford & Grand Union and Kennet & Avon reservoir holding levels since these are the most likely areas to be affected by travel to and from May's Crick Boat Show and the National Waterways Festival in August.
