BW prosecutes drunk driver

On May 9, British Waterways (BW) successfully prosecuted a boater under the 1962 Byelaws relating to the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and River Severn Navigation, following an incident at Gloucester Docks on February 7, 2005.

The boater was represented by a solicitor and pleaded guilty to handling a vessel whilst intoxicated and disobeying BW's lawful orders, which is contrary to Bye-Laws 44 and 43(1) of the 1962 Bye-Laws, respectively.

The boater was fined £100 for each offence and BW was awarded full costs. "Where appropriate, we pursue such cases through the courts as we take breaches of our bye-laws and our terms and conditions very seriously, " said Eliza Botham, service manager for BW south west.
