Fete du Nautisme draws 500,000

This year's edition of the Fete du Nautisme across France and French-speaking Belgium saw over 500,000 visitors attend to experience a range of nautical activities at 570 sites.

The annual water sports festival began as a French operation run by the French Nautical Industries Federation (FIN) with 500 sites participating. In 2005, FIN joined forces with Belgium's Nautibel and added another 70 sites.

This year's activities included underwater sports, dinghy sailing, cruise yachting, canoeing, rowing, motorboating, jet skiing, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, surfing, bodyboarding and more.

FIN says the majority of the 500 French sites participating in the event were full. All the slots for introductory sessions were snapped up quickly as demand far outweighed supply.

Almost 1,000 French clubs, associations, and professionals in 82 regions played a part in the festival, and many coordinators have already given a positive feedback.

Belgium suffered from rain at its 70 participating sites, but visitors still flocked to events such as the Rixensart Challenge swimming and life-saving competitions for children, the Borinaqua diving school, and rowing in the Parc de la Boverle.
