PWCs under scrutiny
01 Jun 2006
Clyde Coastguard and the Clyde District Marine Safety Committee have initiated a survey of Personal Water Craft (PWC) activities, and have formed a sub committee to consider the safety aspects of their use, writes Mike Balmforth.
Some PWC users are using ferry wakes to get added thrills, but although this may amuse them, and some of the passengers, it is of considerable concern to the officers in charge of these vessels.
Should the joy-riders decide to switch to riding the bow wave, or if one gets into difficulties for any other reason, ferry skippers could have to make the difficult decision to attempt a rescue which might put their schedule, ship, and passengers at risk.
The object is to educate PWC users about safety, but first you have to get their attention. Not so easy, it seems.
