Clipper Race keel problems

The entire Clipper Race fleet is currently out of the water in Subic Bay in the Philippines after Glasgow Clipper reported loose keel bolts on February 4 during the leg from Singapore to Qingdao.

The boats were designed by Ed Dubois and built by Shanghai Double Happiness Yachts, but experts from Green Marine have been flown out to the Philippines to sort things out over there.

A statement from the Dubois office said: "We would like to state that while Dubois Naval Architects was responsible for the design of the hull shape, layout (in conjunction with Clipper Ventures) and sail plan, the structural design work was undertaken by separate structural engineers contracted directly by Clipper Ventures.

However, the decision to build the yachts at Double Happiness was that of Clipper Ventures as was the project management."

A statement from Clipper Ventures said: "After carrying out a survey, problems have been identified with the connection between the outer skin of the hull and the keel, and work is being carried out to correct this across the entire fleet. After being hauled out, each boat's 11.5 ton lead and steel keel has been removed ready for the repair."

The race website says over 80 people are working on the fleet, but no restart date has been announced.

So it's not only Volvo Boats that have keel problems?
