Scottish Boat Show has canals theme

The Scottish Boat Show at The Falkirk Wheel on May 19 - 21 will present a wide range of outdoor activities with a central theme of Scotland's Canals, encompassing walking, cycling, canoeing, history tours and try-a-boat trips, writes Mike Balmforth.

For the first time there will be a boat jumble, while children's workshops and Radio Clyde will add a lighter touch. A full range of boating exhibits, boat building demonstrations and competitions for canal trips and holidays should attract many visitors.

The Boat Jumble is being run by the Scottish Maritime Museum and full details of the 4m x 4m pitches, participation rules, and a booking form are available from: Scottish Maritime Museum - call 0141889-1013, or email clydebuilt@ scotmaritime. org. uk Pitches are £35 per day, plus a returnable £35 deposit, all of which must be lodged seven days before the event.

A novel way to get to the show is to travel by water and passenger boats will be operating between Falkirk High Rail Station (on the Glasgow to Edinburgh line) and the show site. This may be a glimpse into a future when people will be commuting into Glasgow and Edinburgh by canal boat.

Of the approximately 35 exhibitors (at the time of writing) more than 20 are boating specialists, offering craft ranging from canoes to sailing dinghies to canal cruisers.
