New slips for Royal Torquay Yacht Club
01 Nov 2006
This latest phase has cost around £3.5m and includes a new slipway and extended quay area big enough to store more than 100 dinghies when the local club – the Royal Torbay Yacht Club - runs championship events.
The club has only managed to hold a couple of events this year – the Albacore Nationals and a Cadet open meeting - due to difficulties with launching. Last month a mini regatta was held to celebrate the opening of the new redevelopment.
This latest phase has taken 10 months to complete, with work delayed by bad weather, but traders and users have said the wait was worth it.
Harbour master, Capt Kevin Mowat said: “The development will ease congestion on the quay when launching large fleets and we now have a truly fit-for-purpose slipway."
The slipways, which were used as embarkation ramps for American troops during the Second World War, have been boarded up.
The whole waterfront redevelopment cost £25m and has also included new Beacon Quay buildings used for different marine businesses, an inner harbour cill and footbridge.
