Can Oban be made into a useful marine facility?

Oban, the principal town in Argyll, is in the heart of the Scotland's west coast cruising grounds, yet it has virtually no yachting facilities. Why not, asks Mike Balmforth?

The primary reason is Oban Bay appears to be sheltered by the island of Kerrera, but the fetch is sufficient to generate waves too large for unprotect-ed pontoon berths - and the moored boats - to survive a storm.
