New boss at sportscotland centre

John Kent has been appointed as new principal of the National Centre Cumbrae in addition to his position as principal at Inverclyde National Centre, which he has held for the past 13 years, writes Mike Balmforth.

The watersports centre, on the island of Great Cumbrae, provides training at all levels, including instructor training.

The appointment follows a review of the management structure and operation of sportscotland’s Inverclyde and Cumbrae facilities. Stewart Harris, chief executive sportscotland said: ‘John and his team will do a great job in forging the two centres into a cohesive unit, which will give customers in the sailing and wider sports community an outstanding service.’

Kent is well known in the sailing community. He has over 40 years experience in the sport as a racing sailor and instructor and has held senior management roles at both Bisham Abbey and Inverclyde. He is very involved in the management of the sport as chairman of RYA Scotland’s High Performance Committee and a member of the RYA Scotland Council. As a director of the Scottish Sailing Institute, he has been actively involved in many major sailing events at Largs.
