Cockwells wins award for apprenticeship programme

SOUTHWEST: Falmouth based Cockwells Modern and Classic Boat Building has been recognised for its apprenticeship programme, helping to keep traditional crafts alive in the UK, writes Katinia Read.

The company, headed by Dave Cockwell, has won an award for outstanding support of a traditional skill, part of Country Living Magazine’s Balvenie Artisan Awards 2007.

The company was selected by a team of judges including skills minister Phil Hope, The Crafts Council, Country Living Magazine and The Balvenie.

The apprenticeship scheme was inspired by Cockwell’s own struggle to learn his traditional boatbuilding craft.

Current projects for the company range from a 60ft commercial passenger ferry to a 45ft replica of a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter to a 37ft gentleman’s launch. Boats are made from sustainable wood and all are bespoke, designed to the owner's requirements.
