IWA warns boaters on flooded/closed navigations

INLAND WATERWAYS: After the recent bouts of exceptional rainfall and consequent flooding, the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) says many navigations are currently closed or restricted.

The IWA is advising boaters that no attempt should be made to disobey advice from local officers of the navigation authorities as to whether it is safe to navigate or not.

River Severn

Gloucester and Sharpness Canal

Lower and Upper Avon (Warwickshire)

Stratford Canal – south of Kingswood

All parts of the river Thames

Grand Union Canal – Braunston locks to Norton junction due to embankment collapse Oxford Canal – Banbury to Shipton-on-Cherwell Kennet and Avon Canal between Colthrop lock and Midgham owing to a breach Kennet and Avon Canal – Newbury to the river Thames

All parts of the Great Ouse - currently flooding above Bedford but expected soon downstream (some locks closed – reverse to increase drainage - between Bedford and Erith). All parts of the Nene (some locks closed – reversed to increase drainage)

Fossdyke Navigation

River Soar

River Trent

Trent and Mersey Canal - river section at Alrewas River Witham

Boaters are also advised to take extra care on the Aire & Calder Navigation (Ferrybridge and Castleford Locks on amber, user operation possible), Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal (below Kinver) and the southern end of the Worcestershire and Birmingham Canal.

The IWA’s National Festival & Boat Show, due to take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, should not be affected by the current situation as water levels on the Great Ouse are expected to subside in the next few days.
