Scottish skills gap increasing

SCOTLAND: The skills gap in Scotland has been increasing over the past decade or so as our industry has grown, writes Mike Balmforth.

But training and skills development for school leavers or those converting from other trades has not kept pace, or in some cases has disappeared.

Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire is commissioning a Maintenance and Repair Skills Analysis in the leisure marine industry, which will complement its Sail Clyde initiative (see last BB) to increase investment in facilities.

The analysis will determine if the current and future skills within the Clyde based industry will meet the anticipated growth of the sector. Companies active in maintenance, repairs, and allied activities can expect to be contacted in late summer with a request for information, which is vital for the future of the industry.
