Speller goes for 5 in ‘spare time’ boat

EAST COAST: During the World Hydroplane Powerboating Championships at Oulton in July, Lowestoft's Craig Speller, who’s won the World OSY 400 Champion title on four occasions, used a locally-built boat.

The Hydroplane 21 was built by Keith Wood of Newson Boats in Lowestoft, with ideas from the Team 21 members, including his father, Roger Speller and brother Mark, who are also the chief mechanics.

‘I used to race powerboats and my son and my daughter also race powerboats,’ said Wood. ‘Craig Speller works for me at Newson. We decided to build a boat specifically to compete in the powerboating championships at Oulton. This is the first hydroplane that I’ve built - I’ve repaired a lot in the past. We started working on it October and have built it in our “spare time”.’

Craig Speller has his own blog - craigspeller.firetrench.com – which was opened so readers could follow his progress as he aims to make it five times World OSY Champion.
