One MBE and one OBE
01 Feb 2007
Mike Golding and Barry Whitelock each received awards in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
Golding says he first learned of his nomination for an OBE while he was sailing in the Velux 5 Oceans race, from which he was forced to retire.
‘I love what I do and have always considered it an honour to be afforded the opportunity of competing at the very highest level in international offshore racing,’ he said.
Golding was awarded an OBE for his contribution to the sport of sailing.
Barry Whitelock left school with the aim of becoming the lock keeper at the Bingley Five Rise Locks. He joined British Waterways in March 1978, working as a lock keeper at various locations until his dream job became available at Bingley, where he has worked ever since.
Whitelock was awarded an MBE for services to Inland Waterways in the North.
