Clyde Marina to double capacity

Clyde Marina, at Ardrossan, has released plans to double its capacity from 300 to 600 berths, writes Mike Balmforth.

The marina is a key element in the regeneration of the Ayrshire town and the harbour, which is owned by Clydeport, was a busy coal exporting port, and is the ferry terminal for the Isle of Arran.

Clydeport plans to build a rock breakwater to protect the existing North Basin and create an additional amount of sheltered water. Other developments at or adjacent to the marina will include a new marina office and boat display area, premises for other marine businesses, housing development, a supermarket, extra car parking, and a restaurant.

Large sections of the Ardrossan masterplan are already under construction and others are under contract between Clydeport and developers. There’s an immediate plan to address current demand by adding 35 berths to bring the existing marina basin to capacity.

Marina director Simon Limb confidently predicts that: ‘Ardrossan and Clyde Marina is set to be one of the prime boating locations, not only in Scotland but the northern United Kingdom.’
