Jerry Martin
01 Jul 2007
Jerry Martin died peacefully at home on Friday, June 15. He had been ill for some time, but continued to find energy in the activities of his beloved marine industry.
Martin started in the boating business in 1955, as Johnson Motors' first sales promotion manager, and founded the Jerry Martin Company in 1962.
He also experimented with marine retailing by building Johnson's hometown dealership, The Boat Show and Camping Centre, in Gurnee, Illinois in 1964. He was among the founders of the Marine Retailers Association of America, and served proudly as Director of Development for many years.
Martin was recognised for his dedication to the industry many times over the years.
He wrote a column for Boating Business on the activities of his International Marine Distribution Association.
He and daughter Laura split away from each other acrimoniously a few years ago, with Laura setting up Martin Flory PR with Kelly Flory. The industry was pleased to hear of their recent plans to merge their PR businesses back together.
