Madecorn plans ‘largest canal-based marina’

INLAND WATERWAYS: South Derbyshire District Council is considering a planning application for what is claimed will be the UK’s largest new-build, canal-based marina development, writes Harry Arnold.
Owners Madecorn Leisure plan a 585-berth complex on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Willington near Derby by converting the existing Willington Lakes, which are currently used as a private trout fishery.
All berths in Mercia Marina will have water, electricity and wireless Internet access and the marina will have a full range of services, including boat sales and hire, docks and a chandlery. Plans also include a gastro-pub and an adjacent log cabin holiday complex.
The marina will require a new access cut into the Trent & Mersey Canal, between bridges 22 and 23, which will also have to be bridged to carry the nearby Findern Lane. Madecorn Leisure says that about 40 new full-time and 80 part-time jobs will be created and the company believes the marina will be a significant attraction and leisure and tourism destination for the area.
The Trent & Mersey has 14ft-wide locks from its junction with the River Trent at Shardlow through Willington to Burton-on-Trent, so the marina will be accessible to wide-beam craft.
