The facility gives students the opportunity to learn their construction, engineering and boatbuilding skills in one of the most up-to-date purpose built facilities in the whole country.

Plans for the building were developed in 2004 when the governors decided a major investment was needed to secure the future of Lowestoft College. The work began in September 2005, once planning permission had been approved and designs by OWL Architects drawn up.

‘We’re very proud of the new build,’ said John Kemp, Director of Faculty for technology. ‘It means all of the trades benefit from improved facilities including better demonstration areas for painting and decorating, an increased number of welding bays and electrical Installation can now offer modern facilities to meet with local needs for short courses.’

The building has been designed with environmentally friendly features and there are specially designed workshops complete with storage space on the first floor. The second floor is dedicated to classrooms and staff rooms.

A glass window which reaches from the ground to the roof and spans the three floors provides an impressive focal point of the building. Visible from the main road, the space will be used as a display area for the Boat Production and Support course and will feature a traditionally constructed boat complete with sail which will be made specifically for the area by students on the course.
