Sumpter takes Lock Keeper of the Year Award
22 May 2007
Sumpter is the British Waterways (BW) lock keeper for the Lapworth flight in Warwickshire on the North Stratford Canal.
The 56 year-old was presented with the Esme Dowling Shield, an engraved windlass and a certificate to frame. He was delighted with the award, saying modestly: ‘It’s all team work with my colleagues.’
A BBC film crew, two radio stations and five print journalists covered the May 10 event.
This year, 25 different nominations were received for the award and each runner-up received a certificate and letter of appreciation.
Bankside staff on canals from Yorkshire to Bristol and rivers, including the Medway, Thames and the Avon, were all commended, reflecting the national nature of APCO hotelboat member’s voyages.
The Esme Dowling Award for Lock Keeper of the Year is voted upon by APCO Hotelboat members. The award is for outstanding performance and customer care and is open to all lock keepers on UK inland waterway navigations. 2006 is the 10th year it has been presented.
