Funding secured for Scotland's canals

British Waterways (BW) has welcomed an additional £2.445 million from the Scottish Executive to fund a range of works which will help push forward the revitalisation of the country’s inland waterways, writes Mike Balmforth.

The new investment will fund improvements on both the Highland and Lowland Canals to help BW and its partners realise the full potential of Scotland’s canals and ensure the network is well placed to meet the needs of waterway users for many years to come.

The work programme for the coming months includes improved boating facilities across all Scotland’s canals, towpath upgrades at key destinations on the Lowland canal corridor, and more developments at Bowling Harbour.

‘There is still a lot of work to be done but with the support of the Scottish Executive and our other partners we can realise the full potential of our inland waterways and create fantastic waterside destinations across Scotland,’ said Steve Dunlop, director Scotland at BW.

Improvements will include a dredging programme on the Forth & Clyde, Union and Crinan Canals, improved facilities at The Falkirk Wheel, Edinburgh Quay, Grangemouth, Port Dundas, Auchinstarry, and Muirton on the Caledonian Canal. A new crew lift for the disabled will improve access at Crinan.
