Broads Authority launches BSS

The Broads Authority launched its Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) at the Norfolk Boat Jumble at the Norfolk Showground on Sunday April 1, the day the scheme came into operation, writes Debbie Cowan.

Now the government has approved the BSS byelaws, larger motor vessels will need to have a boat safety certificate before they can use the rivers and broads.

The scheme is being introduced to the Broads over a three year period. All boat owners affected by the introduction of the scheme were sent letters advising them of the requirement to comply with the scheme by the April 1.

Charlie Middleton, waterways officer, said: ‘The Boat Safety Scheme operated by the Broads Authority is a four-yearly MOT-type test for boats covering engines, cooking, heating, lighting, refrigeration and other domestic appliances. Owners will have to comply with its conditions to be able to navigate the broads.’

Inspectors will be able to check that boats carry a valid certificate to show their engines and equipment have passed the required tests.
