Sailrocket, the sailing world speed record-chasing boat which recently moved from Weymouth to Namibia, last week clocked up her fastest speed yet.

The boat(?) recovered from a recent wipeout to hit 38.3 knots in the Walvis Bay speed strip, beating its previous top speed of 33 knots.

The Sailrocket speed sailing team was based at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy until March this year, but moved to Namibia in search of more constant breezes and rather warmer weather than Weymouth…

The team is confident Sailrocket is a major contender to beat the world speed sailing record of 48.7 knots.

‘We went for it in winds averaging around 18 knots,’ said team leader Paul Larsen. ‘Once into the wind Sailrocket lifted out and the next moments were perhaps the scariest I've ever had.’

I was happy to have gone so much faster than before but also disappointed we hadn't hit 40kts, he added.
