Broads Authority issues alerts
01 Oct 2007
Authority officials are worried that people who cannot see the pilings could hit them or attempt to get right up to the riverbank to moor and cause further erosion.
The authority has contacted local boatyard owners and distributed information to them. The advice given by the authority includes keeping away from riverbank edges and taking note of any temporary red warning markers which have been placed on potential hazards or obstructions.
‘The notices have been issued primarily to stop people having any accidents by getting too close to the edge of the bank,’ said Angie Leeper, Broadland Authority’s waterways strategy officer. ‘If the water levels are high other natural hazards such as tree stumps cannot be seen, so we are urging people to be extra cautious.’
We know there is a temptation for people to sail boats right up to the edge as they get the most breeze that way, but again we would urge caution, she added.
The Broads Authority is currently working with Broadland Environmental Services and the Environment Agency on a 20-year strategy to strengthen flood defences and reclaim land within the tidal areas of the Rivers Yare, Bure and Waveney.
