Concerns over larger Lymington ferries

SOUTH COAST: Lymington sailors are concerned about plans by ferry operator Wightlink to introduce larger ferries on the Lymington - Yarmouth route, writes Iain Sutherland.

The planned new bigger boats would displace twice as much as the existing ferries and have a much larger wind shadow.

Roger Wilson, who has organised the Royal Lymington Yacht Club’s Wednesday sailing sessions, which have introduced hundreds of schoolchildren to sailing, fears that the bulk of the new ferries will make the sessions untenable.

Others think that sailing in the river will just get too difficult. The Royal Lymington Yacht Club is opposed to the ferries but it’s not clear what can be done about them as they are already being built.
