REGENERATION: A major long-term regeneration plan has been announced for Scotland’s Forth & Clyde Canal where it passes through Glasgow on the Maryhill flight of locks, writes Harry Arnold.

It follows extensive consultation with the local community which stressed that green spaces must be maintained.

The proposed mixed use scheme will revitalise the Valley and Botany areas of Maryhill, with 700 to 800 homes, shops, workspaces, community facilities, refurbishment of the Whitehouse Bar and the possibility of a new health centre.

Architects took particular note of the history of the canal corridor and the views to and from the locks.

The proposals form just one element of The Glasgow Canal Regeneration Project’s 20-year vision to revitalise 1,000 acres of the Glasgow branch of the Forth & Clyde Canal from Port Dundas to the main line in Maryhill. It’s a partnership between Glasgow City Council and UK waterside regeneration specialists ISIS which includes British Waterways.
