Hornblower props go under the hammer
01 Sep 2007
The props, ranging from polystyrene cannonballs to a 30ft replica frigate, have been acquired for auction by Heritage Marine, the marine film services company run by local boatyard owner Jim Dines.
The eight-part Hornblower series, based upon the classic CS Forester novels, starred Ioan Gruffudd as the young British naval officer making his way through the ranks during the Napoleonic Wars. The series was praised for its historical accuracy and at a first glance of the 300 lots it's difficult to tell real from ‘fake’.
The 32lb cannon Dines held under his arm is glassfibre, yet the oak barrels, casks, blocks, rigging and much of the other ship paraphernalia are the real thing. The auction will provide prop companies and costumiers with an opportunity to augment their late 18th and early 19th century period portfolios.
‘Whether you're a Hornblower enthusiast, looking to fit out a theme bar, searching out boat fittings or simply after a conversation piece, there's something for everyone,’ said Dines. ‘Prop companies and theatrical costumiers will be able to add to their stock at a fraction of the cost of commissioning new material.’
For example, there are 11 hand-built scale replica frigates, ranging from 12ft to 30ft. They would have cost up to £40,000 each to build, yet are expected to go for between £2000 and £5000.
For Hornblower collectors there are items such as marked-up scripts and director's chairs with stencilled stars' names. And at the other extreme is TV production gear ranging from catering equipment and washing machines to a fork-lift truck. The auction could gross over £50,000.
However, for Hornblower fans the chance to bag a Hornblower collector's item may be some consolation, as it strongly suggests there will be no more new episodes. Certainly, it's unlikely Granada TV would have disposed of the props if it had been planning more episodes in the near future.
The auction venue in Maldon will be announced shortly before the sale. For more information call Heritage Marine on 01621 859373 (www.heritage-marine.com). To view on-line catalogue click on www.theauctioneer.co.uk/hornblower.htm
