Poole Afloat takes in pirate

EVENT: The south coast’s largest free boating festival and watersports event, Poole Afloat, is joining up with another local event, the Harry Paye Charity Fun Day.

The fun day traditionally celebrates a famous pirate and protector of the town, Harry Paye, who lived locally in Hill Street, 600 years ago.

The story goes that after the French and Spanish attacked Poole in the 1400’s they left the town pillaged, burnt and with many dead. Harry took revenge and captured 120 French and Spanish cargo ships full of valuables and wine to help recompense the people of Poole.

Well, six centuries have taken the sharper end out of the story, and so the fun day will feature completely innocuous entertainment including a fisherman’s regatta, Jolly Sailor tug of war, street bands and a pirate procession for which schools are making floats to raise funds for Poole Hospital.

The main event, which encourages people of all ages and abilities to get out on the water, will have, along with marine products and information on sea safety and training courses, free ‘Try-a-Boat’ sessions. A selection of the latest RIBS, powerboats and yachts will be available for scheduled trips around the harbour from Poole Quay Boat Haven (also free).

The event will take place on Poole Quay, on Saturday 21st June from 10am to 6pm.
