Waterways pressure group opens up membership

INLAND WATERWAYS: Save Our Waterways (SoW) – formed as a pressure group some 18 months ago to campaign against the DEFRA cuts in British Waterways’ budgets – has turned itself into a membership organisation, writes Harry Arnold.

The group says that it hasn't changed its main objective which is to campaign to ensure the long term future of the inland waterways of Great Britain, and has endeavoured to identify and implement strategies that will complement rather than compete with existing user groups.

Following two recent open meetings SoW has decided that the vast majority of casual users of our waterways - the 95% that don't own boats - are largely unrepresented.

However, this group would experience a significant impact on their lifestyle if their local waterway went into decline whilst also having much to gain if it was improved.

SoW is therefore offering a low-cost membership - £5.00 per year - to anyone who has an interest in 'their' canal, river or towpath. Whilst it is SoW's intention to complement what other groups are doing rather than compete with them, it is hoped that members of other user groups will value the aims espoused in the SoW constitution and join.

The constitution, membership details and the date of the first general meeting are on the SoW website saveourwaterway.org.uk
