Bishop Skinner Marine – protecting against the insurance gap
01 Aug 2008
We have recognised the distinctive position that marine businesses occupy and have identified solutions. To understand this unique insurance position we must consider the history of the insurance sector. Not a fascinating subject for most we appreciate, but none the less it has its relevance.
Historically, marine insurance, which started amongst the coffee houses of Lloyds, and non-marine insurance have never crossed paths. Marine insurance insured those risks found on the high-seas such as ships and cargo, and non-marine insured the landlubber risks associated to commercial, transport, property and liability risks.
What the insurance sector failed to recognise at that time is that some businesses operate across the boundaries with both land based commercial risks as well as on-the-water activities. For years those activities were insured totally separately – often leading to gaps in cover between the office and the water.
More recently this potential gap in cover has been recognised and insurers have started to offer a single solution for such marine based businesses. Commercial policies with marine sections are now available, to pick up all-encompassing marine commercial risks.
At Bishop Skinner we have taken the time to establish strong relationships with top underwriters to bring our clients not only value but true choice of cover in an otherwise very restricted market.
Because of this, we insure not only the usual marine-based organisations one might associate with this sector (sailing clubs, boatyards and sailmakers), but also those more unusual organisations from multi-disciplined water sports centres to ocean going event organisers.
So how is our approach different?
• We do not put companies in boxes
• We do not assume that because it’s not been done in the past, it can’t be done in the future
• We mould the insurance to fit the company, not the other way around
Bishop Skinner can carry out insurance viability assessments for prospective clients and we can be contacted on 020 7566 5815 or liz.mayon-white@stuartalexander.co.uk
