BW sells a lock

INLAND WATERWAYS: Somewhat unusually British Waterways (BW) has sold a lock and a short length of river, writes Harry Arnold. It is however the derelict and infilled lock that once enabled craft to pass through Llanthony Weir on the old west channel of the River Severn.

Reopening of the lock is the key to providing access from the main waterway network to the entrance lock from the Severn into the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal at Over; a waterway now under restoration by volunteers.

After a year of negotiations the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust has purchased not only the lock and surrounding land, but two tenanted cottages and the rights to alter both Llanthony and Maisemore weirs. The latter is the other controlling weir for the Severn’s west channel, but its lock from the main navigation.

Purchase of the lock by H&GCT is a major project for a canal restoration society and was enabled by a legacy from a society member.
