Coastguard busy for Round the Island Race

ROUND THE ISLAND: The annual Round the Island Race turned out to be a busy time for the Solent Coastguard, which received almost 100 calls from vessels in distress due to the combination of fine weather and record entry of nearly 1900 boats for the race.

According to the coastguard, many boats were left struggling in high winds and choppy conditions. Several sailors were knocked overboard and several more vessels capsized but luckily, there were no serious injuries.

ICAP Leopard, the Farr designed 100ft super maxi yacht owned by Mike Slade, broke the Round the Island Race monohull record, crossing the finish line off Cowes at 9.53am with a crew of rock stars on board who helped him knock over 12 minutes off the previous record, which he set in 2001 with Skandia Leopard.

Attracting most press attention was Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton aboard Alex Thompson’s Hugo Boss along with Ben Ainslie.

Mr Hamilton must reckon yacht racing and car racing have more in common than he thought after Hugo Boss rammed the Farr 45 Atomic before the start off Cowes, leaving the smaller boat with a broken mast.

While Hugo Boss was disqualified for the collision, she got away with a few dings in her nose – much like Mr Hamilton’s McLaren after he shunted Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari in the pit lane at the Canadian Grand Prix…
