Gill Wilson of the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) says that students 'come from all over - just like the boats'. They are mainly drawn from survey firms, boatyards, brokerages and those with a proven marine background looking to set up on their own.

The course, which is led by two experienced surveyors, Paul Stevens and Roger Bell, puts theory to the test. Pre-course reading is followed by four weeks of intensive survey techniques, such as moisture meter use, hammer and thickness testing on various boats, survey of hulls and decks, ancillary parts, skin fittings, hardware and spars and rigging.

A series of partial reports and finally a full survey to hone report writing skills is undertaken during the course, which also includes visits to boatyards and marinas plus a talk on personal indemnity insurance.

Full course details along with all our other courses can be found on www.ibtc.co.uk.
